Square Face Shape: How to Tell If You Have One

A square face shape is defined by structure, not size: the jaw width falls between 80% and 100% of the cheekbone width, the forehead matches both, and the jaw corners form near-right angles with a broad, flat chin (chin width at least 60% of the jaw span). Length-to-width sits in the 1.18–1.40 window, so the face is slightly longer than wide: a rectangle with softened corners, not a stretched one.

How to tell: mirror method

Tie hair back, stand 40 cm from the mirror, jaw relaxed. Trace your outline and look at the bottom third: a square face's jawline descends from the ear and then runs almost horizontally before turning up to the chin, so the two jaw corners read as flat angles rather than curves. If the silhouette's widest points are the jaw and the cheekbones at the same number, and the chin is wide and straight-edged, that is the square signature.

How to tell: the four measurements

Square faces hold all three of these windows:

What a square face looks like: the measurement schematic

Overlay the measurements on the outline and the geometry is almost architectural. The forehead, cheekbone and jaw lines are three horizontal bands of nearly equal length, stacked vertically. The two vertical runs from cheekbone corner down to jaw corner are close to parallel. Only the hairline and the short arc at the chin soften the rectangle. Compared with a round outline, the bounding box is taller; compared with an oval, every corner is a corner.

Hairstyles, glasses and contouring for a square face

Square faces carry strong structure, and the best styling either celebrates it or softens it deliberately; the mistake is doing neither.

Square vs round: the corner test

The round face matches you on width but fails the corner test: its jaw-to-cheekbone ratio can reach 1.00 just like yours, yet its chin width is high and its corners are smooth curves, and its length-to-width ratio drops below 1.22. If your jaw corners are palpable flat angles, you are square. And if the jaw is clearly narrower than the cheekbones with a tapering chin, compare the heart face shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is a square jaw a masculine trait?

A wide, angular jaw reads as a high-testosterone growth pattern and is common across all genders; the difference is mostly in degree, not kind. Studies of facial averages show male square jaws run roughly 8–12% wider relative to cheekbones than female ones on average, but the overlap is large. Styling advice is identical in principle: soften with curves or sharpen with structure, on purpose.

What is the best bang style for a square face?

Anything with a curve or a diagonal: curtain bangs parted at the centre, side-swept fringe, or a softly arched full fringe all interrupt the forehead's straight line. Blunt horizontal bangs echo the jaw line and intensify the boxiness, so treat them as a deliberate statement rather than a default.

Does a square face look good with short hair?

Yes: a pixie or cropped cut exposes the jaw and reads confident and graphic on a square frame. The one short cut to handle with care is the chin-length blunt bob with straight-across ends, which traces the widest jaw line. If you want a bob, go either shorter (above the jaw) or longer (below it) and keep the ends textured.

Can a square face have a pointed chin?

A true square face has a chin width at or above 60% of the jaw span. If your chin tapers to under 55% of the jaw width, the chin-width ratio pushes you toward heart or oval territory even when the jaw angles stay flat. Measure the chin itself rather than judging from the jaw alone.
